- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. The only specimens of Clematis hirsutissima var. hirsutissima from the Watershed were collected in the same region (around Biedell Creek, Saguache Co) the same month (May 2004) by the same collector (Jeanette Flagg); these may be C. hirsutissima var. scottii. But note that Allred et al. (2020) locate C. hirsutissima var. hirsutissima in the northern mountains of New Mexico. It follows the Rio Grande drainage no farther south. The USA distribution is the Rocky Mountains nearly to the Canadian border, the Blue Mountains of northeast Oregon, and the Black Hills of South Dakota. Note that some authorities raise this taxon to species level (e.g., Ackerfield 2022); that is, distinguish C. hirsutissuna from C. scottii.
