- Cushion phlox has been collected fairly frequently in the subalpine and alpine on both sides of the Valley, less frequently in the montane: outcrop crevices, willow carrs, high meadows and cliffs, talus slopes. Phlox pulvinata occurs in all mountain ranges west of the Great Plains, including the Cristos of New Mexico. BONAP also indicates Otero Co in New Mexico, on the Mexican border, but Allred et al. (2020) do not show that location.
