Comments
Of Ipomopsis laxiflora there are only six Watershed vouchered locations, all xeric, volcanic or alkaline: e.g., McIntyre Ridge, 4-4.5 miles ENE of Saguache; or 0.5 miles N of New Mexico on Colo Hwy 159. The earliest record (1921) mysteriously is from “Costilla Co North of Alamosa." Recent iNaturalist observations (2019-2021) have added some locations: between Hwy 160 and the Great Sand Dunes NPP (Alamosa Co); 2 km southwest of La Garita (Saguache Co); 6 km east of Saguache (Saguache Co); and the Blanca Wetlands (Alamosa Co). Iron ipomopsis is a common flower in the Front Range piedmont and in southwest Colorado, and is recorded from the border counties of New Mexico, Rio Arriba and Taos, continuing on down the Rio Grande drainage into west Texas. Note that in the Watershed I. laxiflora and I. longiflora are sometimes sympatric and somewhat similar. But I. laxiflora has corolla tubes 8-20 mm long and leaves with spidery trichomes; I. longiflora has corolla tubes 25-50 mm long and leaves glabrous or sparsely pubescent.
