Despite Weber and Wittmann statement to the contrary (Colorado Flora, Eastern Slope, 4th ed., 2012), Black Canyon gilia (Aliciella penstemonoides) has been found in the Watershed, namely in upper waters of the Rio Grande between Cathedral and Creede (Hum 2017). For distribution maps of these six or seven occurrences, see Hum, 2017, Figure 1.2; and USDA n. d., p. 7. There are also occurrences in the rhyolite cliffs of the side canyons to the Rio Grande below Creede that Richard A. Hum considers may be a hybrid of A. pinnatifida and A. penstemonoides (Hum 2017, p. 67): see Haswell photorecords from 2015. The closest location of A. penstemoides outside the Watershed is west of the Divide, around Cebolla Creek in Hinsdale Co. The flower is rare and endemic to Colorado.
