Comments
In the Watershed, Penstemon virgatus subsp. asa-grayi is a common lower elevation species, typically found on rocky or gravelly slopes in pinyon-juniper habitat. The Lower Basin occurrences are from the San Luis Hills and Pinyon Hills of Conejos Co. This plant is probably present in the Culebras since it is often collected from their extension into New Mexico. This is the glabrous subspecies of P. virgatus, sometimes given species rank as Penstemon unilaterlais (e.g., Harrington, 1954; BONAP, 2022). Its USA distribution is Colarado, New Mexico, and parts of Wyoming and Arizona. In New Mexico, where Allred et al. (2020) say it intergrades into Penstemon neomexicanus, it follows the Rio Grande drainage down to the Mexican border (but not farther down stream).
