- In the Watershed Penstemon strictiformis occupies roughly the same terrain as P. strictus, but it is more of a mid-elevation plant. Collections come from the west side of the Valley; the one exception is a 1936 record from La Veta Pass, which BONAP does not accept. Authors are divided on the relationship of P. strictus and P. strictiformis. Ackerfield considers P. strictiformis a subspecies of P. strictus, but not so FNA and BONAP. Allred et al. 2020 accepts the two species, but note that in northwestern New Mexico they grade into each another. The USA distribution of P. strictiformis is confined to northeast Arizona, west Utah, southeast Colorado, and north New Mexico. It follows the Rio Grande drainage only to Santa Fe and Bernalillo counties, New Mexico.
