- In its Watershed locales, Penstemon secundiflorus is the most frequently encountered early season penstemon. But it is much more collected from the west side of the Valley, an odd fact, since it is common east of the Watershed in the Front Range. It prefers rocky foothill pinyon-juniper and meadowy montane slopes, sometimes associated with substrate of volcanic origin, at times in large populations. It follows the Rio Grande drainage down to central New Mexico. The species is found only in southern Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico.
