- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Typically Penstemon caespitosus is a mid-elevation mat Penstemon of open, dry slopes. The distribution and dates here reflect herbarium labels, but currently there is professional opinion (e.g., William Jennings, expert on Penstemon and rare flowers in Colorado) that vouchers from the Watershed labelled "Penstemon caespitosus" are incorrect. BONAP indicates Saguache and San Juan counties, leaving presence of the species in the Watershed unclear. On the other hand, Ackerfield (2015, 2020) shows P. caespitosus for nearly every Watershed county. Allred et al. (2020) do not show P. caespitosus in New Mexico; and BONAP shows the species distributed mainly through southwestern Wyoming, Utah, northeastern Arizona, and northwestern Colorado. Several iNaturalist photorecords labeled "Penstemon caespitosus" found 2022 and 2023 at North Clear Creek Falls (Hinsdale Co, in the Watershed) lactually ook like Penstemon teucrioides. In short, as yet there is no indisputable documentation that P. caespitosus grows within the Watershed.
