- In the Watershed, narrow-leafed penstemon is occasionally found on dry, rocky foothill slopes, but also in other habitats. One location has been often observed for over 90 years, in sandy substrate among aspen and mixed conifer near Mosca Creek within the Great Sand Dunes NPP. In the USA, concentrated in the Four Corners region and in the Front Range from New Mexico to Wyoming, with a scattering into the western Great Plains—Penstemon angustifolius has been found in Rio Grande drainage counties of New Mexico that border Colorado: Rio Arriba, Taos, and Colfax. The Watershed specimens have been identified as P. angustifolius var. caudatus and var. angustifolius.
