- In the Watershed, narrow-leafed penstemon is occasionally found on dry, rocky foothill slopes, but also in other habitats. One location, among aspen and mixed conifer by Mosca Creek within the Great Sand Dunes NM, has persisted for over 90 years. Penstemon angustifolius—which in the USA has concentrations in the Four Corners region and in the Front Range from New Mexico to Wyoming, with a scattering into the western Great Plains—has been found in Rio Grande drainage counties of New Mexico that border Colorado: Rio Arriba, Taos, and Colfax. The Watershed specimens have been identified as P. angustifolius var. caudatus and var. angustifolius.
