- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. There are only a few Watershed vouchers for this scarce, alpine poppy; upper Whiskey Creek (Costilla Co, 2015), Trinchera Peak (Costilla Co, 1998), one from Sheep Mountain (San Juan Co, 2007), the other from Wheeler National Monument (Mineral Co, 2004). There is one occurrence in New Mexico, from Taos Peak in Taos Co. Collections are rare throughout its USA range, which is central Colorado, northeast Utah, northwest Wyoming, and southeast Montana. For this taxon there is major nomenclatural disagreement among authorities. FNA has Papaver radicatum var. kluanense; Ackerfield (2022) has P. Kluanense; BONAP and Allred et al (2020) have P. coloradense, following Holmgren and Holmgren (2012), who argue that the Old World and New World alpine species are distinct.
