- A low-elevation broomrape in the Watershed, Aphyllon ludovicianum is less commonly recorded than A. fasciculata. It is collected from sandy substrate where Grindelia and Artemisia grow, on which it is parasitic. It has been found on the east side of the Upper Basin—mainly around the Great Sand Dunes and the Baca NWR—with the exception of one collection from San Pedro Mesa in Costilla Co. A recent record is provided by Matt Langemeier from near the top of High Dome in the Great Sand Dunes NPP, growing in pure sand in association with Lygodesmia juncea. The USA distributions centers in the Rocky Mountains states, Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico, with scattered locations in the Pacific coast states, the Great Plains, and the upper Midwest. The species follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico and Texas to the Gulf of Mexico. Note that the genus name Aphyllon was proposed by Adam C. Schneider (2016), who confines the genus Orobanche to Old World species.
