- Campared to another yellow Watershed evening primrose, Oenothera elata, O. flava prefers a habitat that is drier, steeper, and higher in elevation). O. flava and seems especially to enjoy rocky slopes above streams. It also can be found in disturbed ground: beside trails and pond and reservoirs. The most recent record is a 2022 iNaturalist photorecord of a plant found in Alamosa Co between Mosca and the San Luis Lake (#133136073). This is mainly a Great Basin, desert Southwest, and Rocky Mountain plant. It follows the Rio Grande drainage in New Mexico to the border with Mexico, but no farther down stream.
