- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Pinyon groundsmoke has been typically found in forest openings and on grassy foothill slopes, though not often in the Watershed. The one record from the east side of the Valley was along Hwy 160 five miles E of Ft. Garland. There are a few records from Rio Arriba and Taos counties of New Mexico. The rest of the USA ranges lies to the northwest, where the species is widespread in all states west of the USA.
