- Narrow-leaf fireweed is very common on both sides of the Watershed, in forest openings and meadow slopes, often in terrain recovering from forest fires (see the first photorecord). The Watershed species belongs to the subspecies circumvagum, which is tetraploid. Narrow-leaf fireweed is present in all states west of the Great Plains, the northern Great Plains, and the New England states, running down the Appalachians to West Virginia. It follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico but not quite to the Mexican border.
