- Of water miner's-lettuce in the Watershed, so far there are about 10 locations, all on the west side of the Valley, from Hwy 114 south to Cumbres Pass. Sharples (2017) says his collection of Montia chamissoi from 7 miles south of Platoro (Conejos Co, 2013) is the first for the South San Juan Mountain Wilderness Area. The species is probably under-recorded. It needs shade and moist ground, and is often hidden in vegetation at the edge of streams. Sometimes it needs to be actively looked for to be found. In New Mexico, it has been collected from mountains on both sides of the Rio Grande, including the Cristos up to the Colorado border. It follows the Rio Grande drainage about a third of they way down New Mexico but no farther. This Montia is found in all USA states west of the Great Plains, with a very few occurrences in southeast Minnesota, northeast Iowa, and northeast Pennsylvania (where the species is considered endangered).
