Comments
There have been three records of Claytonia rosea from the Watershed. The earliest was from La Veta pass, collected in 1901 (its identification was verified in 1989). The other two were photographed, more than a century later, in 2023 near Mosca Creek, one at the top of Mosca pass (iNaturalist observation 166512702) and the other 0.87 miles west of the pass (iNaturalist observation 831190880). Note that the species, normally a Front Range plant in Colorado, seems to have spilled over into the Watershed via the two lowest passes of the Cristos, La Veta and Mosca. BONAP treats Western springbeauty as Claytonia lanceolata var. rosea, but FNA accepts the species and describes its USA distribution as Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. The New Mexico locations are in the northwest corner, including two from Rio Arriba Co, both west of the Continental Divide, outside the Rio Grande drainage.
