- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Cutleaf blazingstar prefers dry rocky slopes, usually in the foothills, often alongside roads. Vouchers are from locations scattered all around the Valley: but of those with photos, only two appear to be Mentzelia laciniata: Antonito (Conejos Co, 1989); and dry mountain side 2 miles W of La Veta pass (Costilla Co, 1937). It should be noted that voucher locations are by no means sure, since determination of many vouchers is questionable (just take a look in SEINet for the Watershed). All in all, the species seems to be quite rare in the Watershed. For determination, close examination of the seed coating may be required—other features such as petal color and leaf shape are variable. Mentzelia laciniata's range is restricted to east Arizona, southwest Colorado, and northern New Mexico (in Rio Arriba and Taos counties).
