- Mentzelia albicaulis prefers dry open slopes, but occasionally can be found along roads. This early-season blazingstar is not often collected from the Watershed. The Lower Basin collection is from the San Luis Hills. There are only two collections from the Cristos, and only one from the New Mexico Cristos, but the species follows the Rio Grande drainage of New Mexico down to the Mexican border, and into the tip of west Texas. In the USA it is present in all states west of the Great Plains. Note that with some plants the key character of pinnatifid leaves applies only to some of the basal leaves, the majority of the leaves being entire. The definitive character is the seed, which is very distinctive and unique in the Mentzelia. This seed can be recognized, green and maturing, in plants that are still flowering.
