- Records of rough-seeded fairy bell are all from the south San Juans except for two collections from the north Cristos: 1 mile S of Valley View Hot Springs and 8 miles NNE of Ft. Garland (there are no collections from the Cristos of New Mexico). The plant is usually found in shade of mixed conifer woods. This is a western USA plant, although absent from the West coast. Prosartes trachycarpa is present in the Rio Grande drainage as far south as Socorro Co, New Mexico. Hogan and Elliot (2022) note that it is an early season species and perhaps overlooked by collectors.
