- Around the Watershed, dragonhead is common in natural meadows, but also in disturbed lands such as beside roads and parking areas. It has not been collected from the Culebras but undoubtedly is present there judging from the many collections from the Cristos of New Mexico. American dragonhead is wide spread in the USA except for California, the south Great Plains, and a number of states in the Deep South. In New Mexico it is present in the Rio Grande drainage to the Mexican border but not in Texas. By the way, dragonhead seeds are high in oil and may have some commercial value.
