- In the Watershed Fendler's waterleaf is a common creek-side plant of the montane, growing also in seeps, on lake shores, and in moist shade of cottonwood and conifer groves up into the subalpine. It is not collected from the Culebras but may be present there judging from the New Mexico records. The USA population is disjunct. Hydrophyllum fendleri var. fendleri occurs in the Central Rocky Mountains of Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico. H. fendleri var. albifrons occurs in the Cascades and central valley of Idaho. The species follows the Rio Grande drainage of New Mexico to the Mexican border but not farther into Texas.
