- Monkshood is spread around the Valley in all mountain ranges. It prefers moist habitats—by streams and seeps, usually as forest understory but also as part of wet meadows and forest openings. All parts of Aconitum columbianum are toxic to mammals. Its USA range is states west of the Great Plains, with uncommon occurrences around the Great Lakes. It follows the Rio Grande drainage through New Mexico almost to the Mexican border.
