Comments
Moss gentian is found in mesic habitats near streams or lakes, but this early spring gentian is not often collected from the Watershed—and only once from the east side of the Valley, on Vermejo Park Ranch in the Culebras near the border with New Mexico (2008). Chondrophylla fremontii has been collected from the Rio Grande drainage Cristos in New Mexico, although it extends south only halfway down the state. The USA range, a patchy one, is Central and Southern Rockies, with rare occurrences in southern California and northeast Arizona. As with Chondrophylla prostrata, these locations may reflect glacial refugia. Note that molecular analysis has confined the Genus Gentiana to the Old World. Weber and Wittmann (4th ed.) show C. fremontii as conspecific with C. aquatica, an Asian species.
