Quercus gambelii is the only native oak in the Watershed. It is established in three areas: southwest and southeast of Poncha Pass, foothills of the north Cristos down to La Veta Pass, and Rio Chama and east toward Cumbres Pass. Much more common and wide spread in New Mexico, it is recorded from Rio Grande drainage counties from Taos to the Mexican border, and on east to the Big Bend country in Texas. It is primarily a Southwest USA oak, with a propensity to hybridize, a propensity that has generated a wealth of synonyms.
