- There has been one record of Lupinus caespitosus var. utahensis in the Watershed, a photorecord of 2020, within the town limits Crestone. There were several plants in disturbed ground beside a road. Although the plant is perennial, there are no subsequent records of it in the location. The USA distribution centers around the Central and Northern Rockies and the Intermountain region, but there are scattered locations in the other states W of the Great Plains. It has been recorded from Rio Arriba Co in New Mexico, but no farther south in the Rio Grande drainage. Note that most authorities describe this taxon as a variety of Lupinus lepidus: L. lepidus var. utahensis; or L. lepidus subsp. caespitosus (e.g., POWO; iNaturalist; Weber & Wittman 2012; Allred, et al. 2020). We follow BONAP (2024) in treating it as deserving species status.
