- Whorled locoweed tends toward higher elevations, preferring open xeric slopes and forest openings. All recorded locations are on the west side of the Valley except for two. One is in the North Cristos, found on a :dry alpine ridge north of California Peak," near Zapata Lake (Hogan and Elliot, 2022), the other near Indian Creek Pass in the Culebras SW of Ft Garland. The USA range of Oxytropis splendens is the Rocky Mountains and northern North Dakota. The flower extends down the Rio Grande drainage only a little ways into New Mexico (its farthest reach south).
