Comments
Purple locoweed, common on both sides of the Valley, occupies many different habitats, from shrubland to sage-dominated dry slopes to subalpine meadows and forest openings. Although not yet recorded from the Culebras, no doubt it grows there, judging from the range in New Mexico. Oxytropis lamberti has a large distribution in the center of the USA—including the desert Southwest, the Intermountain region, the Rocky Mountains, and the Great Plains. In New Mexico it follows the Rio Grande drainage nearly to the Mexican border, but ranges no farther down stream. Note that when O. lamberti and O. sericea are sympatric (which happens in the Watershed), hybrids can be formed.
