- Purple milkvetch is common all around the Valley. Its native habitat is grasslands in the foothills and the montane, but it will take advantage of disturbed ground, for instance along irrigation ditches and beside unpaved parking areas in towns. It grows in all regions west of the Mississippi except for the lower Great Plains and the far West coast. It follows the Rio Grande drainage two thirds of the way down New Mexico but no farther.
