- In the Watershed, in mountain regions on both sides of the Valley, lesser wintergreen has usually been found in conifer understory, growing in shaded moist soil by water, but several records have also been from meadows, Pyrola minor has not been documented from the Culebras, but the flower is undoubtedly present there, judging from New Mexico collections. The USA distribution is much like other Watershed wintergreens, covering all Western and northern states. It has been recorded, rarely, from Rio Arriba and Santa Fe counties of New Mexico but no farther south in the Rio Grande drainage.
