- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Wild cucumber was collected four times from the town of Alamosa, 1932-1985, in yards and along the floodplain of the Rio Grande. A native species, Echinocystis lobata has been cultivated as an ornamental and escaped back into the wild, especially in the Colorado Front Range and on east in the northern half of the USA. In the Rio Grande drainage of New Mexico it is present only in Rio Arriba and Taos counties.
