- NEED IN SITU PHOTOS. Hornwort has been found at both lower and higher elevations in the Watershed. There is one record from the Upper Basin (Blanca Wildlife Area), and three occurrences in ponds near Fox Creek, Spruce Lake, and Lower Silver Lake in Conejos Co. In the South San Juans, Sharples (2017) found it "rare in low elevation ponds," around 8,950' elev. Ceratophyllum demersum is capable of this range in elevation. It is a highly successful plant, not only present in every state of the USA but also in every region of the world except for Antarctica. BONAP shows it following the Rio Grande drainage to the Gulf of Mexico, but very patchily.
