- Although simple campion is common in the neighboring San Juan River drainage and in the Rio Grande drainage of New Mexico, the flower is not often collected in the Watershed. There are a total of four vouchers (1896-2001): Rock Creek W of Monte Vista, Wolf Creek pass (two records), and Black Canyon near Creston (this 1896 record is mistakenly georeferenced as Villa Grove). Usually Silene scouleri is encountered in montane forests and meadows, sometimes by roadsides. The USA distribution is somewhat disjunct, with one population centered around Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and western Montana (mainly subsp. scourleri), and another centered around Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexiico (mainly subsp. hallii). In New Mexico Silene scourleri follows the Rio Grande drainage from the border with Colorado to the border with Mexico, but not farther down stream.
