- Comments
- Of Escobaria vivipara there are only five Watershed collections: near the Great Sand Dunes (Alamosa Co, 1934); near Rock Creek W of Monte Vista (Rio Grande Co, 1972); Poso Creek road W of La Garita (Saguache Co, 2003); E of the Elephant Rocks N of Del Norte (Rio Grande Co, 2015); and La Botica, La Jara canyon (Conejos Co, 2017). Ackerfield says the species is “common in open dry places” and Allred et al. (2020) say it is the "most widespread and most common" Escobaria in New Mexico, but the flower is not common in the Colorado Watershed, or at least not commonly collected. It is present in all the Great Plains states and all Western states except for Washington and Oregon, and it follows the Rio Grande drainage beyond the Big Bend country of Texas. For the proposed new name, Pelecyphora vivipara, see Sanchez, Daniel, et al. (2022). Currently (May, 2023) FNA goes with Coryphantha vivipara, and BONAP goes with Escobaria vivipara.
