- Comments
- Of Escobaria vivipara there are only four Watershed vouchered locations: near the Great Sand Dunes (Alamosa Co, 1934; 2007; 2021); near Rock Creek west of Monte Vista (Rio Grande Co, 1972); Poso Creek road west of La Garita (Saguache Co, 2003); and La Botica, La Jara canyon (Conejos Co, 2017). So the herbarium evidence would question the statement of Ackerfield that the species is “common in open dry places” of Colorado and the assertion of Allred et al. (2020) that it is the "most widespread and most common" Escobaria in New Mexico. Photorecords, however, have documented many occurrences from all the foothills of the Watershed (see iNaturalist observations 2018-2024). The species is present in all the Great Plains states and all Western states except for Washington and Oregon, and it follows the Rio Grande drainage beyond the Big Bend country of Texas. For the proposed new name, Pelecyphora vivipara, see Sanchez, Daniel, et al. (2022). Currently (Nov 2024) FNA goes with Coryphantha vivipara, BONAP and iNaturalist go with Escobaria vivipara, and POWO goes with Pelecyphora vivipara.
